DNA re-sample fee
June 02, 2008, 12:46:39 PM
|
ICHO was recently informed by the University of Kentucky about needed changes in pricing. There will now be a re-testing fee charged if your horse's sample is insufficient to properly test. Text of the letter is located below. Basically what this means is that if your horse's sample needs to be re-tested, there will be a charge for it. Previously there was not. Please read and follow the instructions on the DNA forms closely and you should have no problems. Be sure to send in a plentiful sample. If a retest is required, the ICHO will contact you.
I am writing to inform you that some changes in pricing regarding re-samples will be implemented by the University of Kentucky Equine Parentage Lab beginning May 1, 2008. Unfortunately due to the decrease in new registrations at many registries, sample number has correspondingly decreased. Although costs for consumables and salaries have increased over the years, we have not increased price per sample tested in well over ten years. Therefore several services, the cost of which the lab has been absorbing, must now be charged to the customer.
Changes include: The lab will no longer try to process samples that do not meet the criteria for sample quality. If we receive body fuzz, insufficient sample or other samples not appropriate for testing, the lab will no longer make an attempt to process these. Instead a resample request will be sent immediately.
If a minimal sample does not pass parentage and so little sample was provided that no sample is available for the mandatory rerun, the result will be reported as an exclusion and charged for. The registry/owner will then also have to pay for the re-sample processing. On foal exclusions we will no longer rerun a sire or darn if they have other offspring on file. The breed registry will have the option of paying for a retest on an archived sample or request a new sire or dam sample.
I hope you understand the need for these changes. We feel they are necessary to prevent any price increase in routine testing. We value your business and encourage you to contact us if there are any questions about these new policies.
Sincerely,
Kathryn T. Graves, PhD Director, Equine Parentage and Research Laboratory. |
